In the other Saturday game, Catania continued their push for a Europa League slot by beating fellow contenders Udinese in a 3-1 win at the Stadio Massimino. All four goals came in the second half of the game, seeing Alejandro Gómez netting twice and Francesco Lodi scoring Catania’s third, Luis Muriel scored a late consolation goal for the away side which, by then was way out of the game.
Napoli managed to hold on to second place with a 3-2 win over Atalanta, Edinson Cavani netted twice in the game to relieve him of his 6 week goal drought.
AC Milan kept up the pressure on Napoli and overcame their midweek footballing lesson from Lionel Messi and his Barcelona side in the Champions League by beating Palermo 2-0 at the San Siro, Balotelli once again on the score sheet with both goals for the home side.
Fiorentina also kept up with the pace by beating Genoa 3-2 leaving Lazio, Inter and Roma needing to win in their Sunday evening ties. Unfortunately for Inter their game against Sampdoria was called off due to adverse weather conditions as heavy snowfall was expected. No new date for the fixture has been announced.
In other results AS Roma beat Parma 2-0 with goals from Lamela and Totti securing the win for the home side, while Lazio fell foul to Torino losing 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico Grande.
Chievo managed to keep their distance from the relegation battle with a 2-0 win over relegation candidates US Pescara, Siena made a little ground on Genoa with a scoreless draw at home to Cagliari in their effort to rise out of the drop zone, with a pivotal game next week which sees the two meet each other in a relegation showdown.
