The round’s opening match sees both teams with relegation worries play each other. US Pescara play host to Siena; while survival is not mathematically impossible for Pescara, they are a sure bet to be relegated and will be keen to latch on to any chance they can to remain in the top flight. Siena however will be hoping to maintain or improve on their position after sneaking out of the relegation zone after round 31.
In the second of Saturday’s games Atalanta play host to Fiorentina. While this game should be technically bread and butter for Fiorentina, Atalanta will be buoyed by their dramatic comeback against Inter last week. This game is a great chance for La Viola to claw back even more points on the Champions League chasing teams.
One of my games of the round has got to be AC Milan v Napoli at the Giuseppe Meazza. These two are fighting it out for the automatic Champions League spot which is currently occupied by Napoli. However, if Milan are not careful they could end up inviting Fiorentina into the Champions League fray.
Relegation favourites Palermo host Bologna at the Renzo Barbera in Sunday’s early kick off. Bologna have failed to win in their last three outings and will be hopeful that a good win against a team currently nestled in the relegation zone will be the start of an upturn in fortunes.
Mid tabled Catania travel to the Stadio Marc Antonio Bentegodi to face Chievo Verona. The Flying Donkeys are creeping ever closer to the relegation battle and will be hoping to kill off Catania’s hopes of a European spot.
Looking at recent performances and form, Parma vs Udinese promises to provide you with all the effects of receiving a general anaesthetic – hopefully both teams still have a slight hope of reaching a European slot to liven the game up a little, if not I predict a 0-0 bore draw.
Internazionale will be looking to make amends for the shocking second half display against Atalanta in the last round. They face Cagliari who are level on points with the Nerazzurri and Andrea Stramaccioni will be looking to change things around and carry on marching towards Europe.
Genoa will be disappointed at last week’s result which saw them drop firmly into the relegation three. They face a tricky Sampdoria side who also have concerns about their current form, with that said this tie is not impossible and with the two teams around them fighting it out they have a genuine chance to claw back out of the dreaded drop zone.
Torino are hovering close to the relegation positions and host ‘Papa Francesco’ [Totti] and his AS Roma team-mates. Unfortunately, after the disappointing Derby della Capitale last week Roma will be looking for a much improved performance and will have their sights set on Torino.
Finally we come to the Monday night showcase game. The provisional Champions Juventus travel to Rome to face Lazio. Juventus will be hurting from their master class given to them by the German giants Bayern Munich. Lazio looked lacklustre against Roma last week, which raises motivational questions – after all, if they can’t get motivated for the Rome derby then how motivated will they be against the team at the top?
