Only five years ago, the name – ‘F.C. Internazionale Milano’ would have been spoken in the same context as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and all the biggest European titans.
This is because until only recently, Inter were a giant of European and Italian football, who won the last of their three Champions League titles under José Mourinho in 2010 and had world famous players such as Javier Zanetti and Samuel Eto’o playing for them.
Since then, the former Italian giants have finished very disappointingly in Serie A and haven’t won silverware since the same year they won the Champions League, 2010.
Varying reasons can be attributed to this recent period of regression from the Nerazzurri, they lost José Mourinho to Real Madrid in 2010, and most of the following managers have all appeared to have been huge disappointments.
But what is the situation now? They currently have Premier League winner Roberto Mancini in charge, and quite a few changes have been made around the San Siro.
In the window just gone, Mancini has brought in top players to try to get Milan where they should be in Serie A – Geoffrey Kondogbia, Ivan Perišić, Miranda, Stevan Jovetić and Jeison Murillo just to name a few.
In Kondogbia, Mancini has bought a potentially world-class holding midfielder who is only 22, in Perišića tricky winger who will get a decent haul of goals and assists per season and a very experienced centre-half in Miranda who will make a great partner to either Juan Jesus or Andrea Ranocchia.
With Stefan Jovetić, Inter Milan have a striker already proven in Serie A and one who didn’t get his fair shot in England after a successful spell with Fiorentina wherein he scored 35 goals in 116 Serie A appearances. Jovetic will be out with a point to prove and will certainly provide goals for the Milanese.
It appears that Inter have bought smart this summer, and whilst rewards won’t be reaped instantly given the time it’ll take for the new team to gel, we’ll certainly see Inter rising up Serie A in the coming years. While there is still a long way to go in the season, Inter have so far performed well and profited from Juventus’ downfall to sit in joint first spot with Fiorentina.
They aren’t the only team in Milan that have dramatically strengthened this summer, with AC Milan also spending big on players such as Carlos Bacca, Alessio Romagnoli and Andrea Bertolacci.
With this, hopefully we can see a fresh, new and improved Milan derby which will restore the famous tie to its former glory.
